Masahiro Mori and Buddhist robotics

Editorial notes

Classification rationale, evidence status, source limitations.

Classification rationale

A historical people record about Mori’s documented writing, teaching and Buddhist robotics, with later AI relevance and reception. It does not classify Mukta as a denomination, infer his involvement in Mindar, or establish machine consciousness.

Evidence status

Published interviews, participant recollections, bibliographic records and scholarly analyses document Mori’s Buddhist robotics, its practical settings and critical reception; a 2025 memorial records his death.

Classification confidence: High

Source limitations

Kimura’s 2015 and 2018 studies form one scholarly lineage. Pope and Metzler repeat Schodt’s institute-practice account while contributing their own philosophical analysis. Interviews, correspondence descriptions and recollections document attributed teaching and historical practice; catalogs establish bibliographic facts. The sources do not establish present Mukta activity, Buddhist consensus, or machines’ subjective experience.

Five substantive external interpretive or firsthand reporting families are counted: Kimura (references 1 and 8 together), Schodt (6), Pope and Metzler (7), Borody (11), and Moro (15). This is not five independent observations of institute practice or confirmations of machine experience. Pope and Metzler’s quotation of Schodt is dependent evidence for practice, although their philosophical reading is a separate analytical contribution. Mori’s writings and interviews, Kamide’s collaboration and interview, Tsuchiya’s participant recollection, publisher descriptions, catalogs and the memorial are not counted as independent coverage of the philosophy. Multiple DOI, publisher, repository and full-text locators for one reference remain one work. Strong coverage, weight 4, reflects sustained close readings, firsthand reporting and explicit scholarly criticism, not a URL count or endorsement of Buddhist claims. Reconstructability concerns the published documentary trail, not replication of historical meetings or religious experience. The historical record does not establish present Mukta activity or succession, robot consciousness, or a universal Buddhist position.
